During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as well, Hermetica enjoyed great prestige and was popular among alchemists. Most of the Byzantine scientists considered Hermetica as the source of their knowledge.
In general, the wisdom attributed to Hermes Trismegistus in ancient times combined knowledge of both the material and spiritual worlds, making his works relevant to those interested in the interrelationship between the material and the spiritual.

The role of Hermes Trismegistus can be found in both Muslim and Baha'i writings. In those traditions, Hermes Trismegistus was associated with Prophet Idris. And Idris is known as the third messenger.
Quotations of Hermes are also found in the works of Muslim alchemists such as Jabir Ibn Hayyan and Ibn Amil. In fact, these two have quoted and interpreted about 960 Hermetic quotations throughout their works.
Bahá'u'lláh, the founder of the Bahá'í Faith, in his tablet called: Tablet of Wisdom, identifies Idris with Hermes.
